Biochemistry 1

Outline

Biochemistry I is about biomolecules. Students will learn the chemical structures and properties as well as the functions of biomolecules such as nucleic acids, DNA, RNA, amino acids, proteins, enzymes, sugars, carbohydrates, lipids and membranes.

 

The course has 2 parts: lecture and exercise. One meeting per week for each part.

 

Prerequisites:

Prior to taking this course, students need to have passed Introductory Chemistry 2 or the equivalent and Introductory Biology 2 or equivalent.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:
1. Recognize the chemical (2D and 3D) structures of biomolecules
2. Identify the graphical representations of biomolecular structures and explain the molecular bases of the structures.
3. Define, categorize and compare the non-covalent forces that stabilize the structures of biomolecules
4. Apply the knowledge of the principal laws of chemistry and physics on assessing the behavior of biomolecules
5. Relate the chemical and structural properties of biomolecules to their functions in biological systems
